'Enable 32-bit Applications' is False

This error primarily occurs on 64bit versions of Windows where the IIS setting 'Enable 32-Bit Applications' is not set to "true" for the DefaultAppPool.

Here are the instructions to fix the error in IIS 8:

  1. Open the IIS Manager
    • Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
      OR
    • Run 'inetmgr':

  2. In the 'Connections' panel on the left, under the first node (http://localhost/ or your machine's name), click on 'Application Pools' either in the 'Connections' panel or in the content view panel:

  3. Select 'DefaultAppPool' and click on 'Advanced Settings' in the 'Actions' panel to the right of the window, or right-click on 'DefaultAppPool' and select 'Advanced Settings'.

  4. In the 'Advanced Settings' window and under the first node, 'General', you will find 'Enable 32-bit Applications' and its value:

  5. Make sure the value is 'True'.

NOTE: If you are running a version of IIS that does not include this property of 'DefaultAppPool' or cannot achieve the above instructions use this script:

    - Open command prompt and navigate to %systemdrive%\Inetpub\AdminScripts

    - Then execute cscript.exe adsutil.vbs setW3SVC/AppPools/Enable32BitAppOnWin64 “true”

NOTE: Sometimes this error is caused by a missing Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0 installation.

    - You can download Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0 from this link.
