How to Speed Up Page Loading Time

Hosted HelpConsole help systems may seem slower as they grow if server resources are being taxed too heavily or if server settings aren't set properly to maximize page loading speed.

If you are hosting HelpConsole 6 on a third party server, make sure to contact your hosting service providers about page loading speed concerns.

This how to article will be considering improving server speed as if you are running the program with IIS on a local server.

You can do various things to improve page loading speed. Aside from editing code, you can try the following:

  • Enable Dynamic and Static Content Compression on your server:

    1. Install the appropriate Windows Features:
      1. Open Control Panel.
      2. Go to Programs, or Programs and Features.
      3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
      4. In the Windows Features window, expand Internet Information Services.
      5. Expand World Wide Web Services
      6. Expand Performance Features.
      7. Check both Dynamic and Static Content Compression.
      8. Press OK and wait for Windows to find the needed files and install the features.

    2. Enable compression in IIS:
    1. In IIS, in the Connections pane (left side), select your HelpConsole 6 virtual application (helpconsole6).
    2. In the center pane under the Features View tab, select Compression.
    3. Make sure that both 'Enable dynamic content compression' and 'Enable static content compression' is checked.
    4. Right-click the HelpConsole 6 virtual application and select Refresh.

  • If your project makes use of images frequently, reduce your image file sizes:

    1. Open your project's images folder. (C:\Program Files\HelpConsole 6\{Project Name Here}\images (or images_{Skin_Name}).
    2. Convert all files to a smaller file format.
      • Typically, use JPEG for photos, GIF for graphics, and PNG if you want to maintain transparencies in the picture.
    3. Optionally, you can reduce image resolution to help file size.
      • Alternatively, you can also reduce image resolution by specifying each image's height and width attributes in HelpConsole, this will reduce file loading time but not file size.

If you're looking for an upgrade and a fast and easy way to host HelpConsole and your projects on a dedicated server, Green Software offers a subscription based hosting service,, that will take care of all service pack updating, hotfix applications, server management and etc.
