How to Load Help Based on Connection

Based on Internet connection, load local help or online help

A common practice is to distribute a static help system with your application and also have a dynamic help system on your company website than can be continually updated. To take this a step further, you could include a webpage with the static help system that will detect if the user is connected to the Internet and load either the static help system or the online help system accordingly.

Here's an example of a webpage that will accomplish this:

<html>
<head>
<title>INTERNET CONNECT</title>
<script>
function doConnectFunction() {
//I'm fired if I'm connected to the internet
alert("hello");
location.href="
http://www.extremeease.com";
}
function doNoConnectFunction() {
//I'm fired if I'm not connected to the internet
alert("goodbye");
location.href="
http://www.msn.com";
}
var i = new Image();
i.onload = doConnectFunction;
i.onerror = doNoConnectFunction;
i.src = 'http://www.extremeease8.com/images/StartCreating.gif';
</script>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

Notes:

- Save the above code in a file named "loadhelp.htm"
- Remove or comment the alert() lines
- Change http://www.extremeease.com to the url of your online help system
- Change http://www.msn.com to the url of the local help system
- Change the url for i.src to an image within your online help system
